WELCOME (BACK) TO FUSE

As we emerge from lockdown, still in the grip of the pandemic, we look around with eyes wide open. It’s an uncharted landscape for artists and performers. There is uncertainty in the arts and creative industries, and much planning and replanning.

It might be tempting to give it all away, but artists have always been resilient in the face of crisis. Art is a mirror that reflects the tensions—and the joy—we all feel. Upholding that mission, at FUSE we’re asking some key questions about how we curate, who we curate and why we’re doing it. The answer? To forge connections between people who have been starved of interaction, and, in the process, give birth to hope.

When COVID hit in 2020, FUSE’s inaugural Autumn 2020 program was cancelled after its opening night. Then the Spring 2020 program was moved online. This reshuffling of priorities was another testament to endurance in the face of uncertainty, but ultimately, performers thrive on interplay with an audience. The physical connections we’ve lost in lockdown are given full expression through performance.

Fast-forward to Autumn 2021.

When the city was finally unlocked, we returned bigger and better than ever. After the global washout that was 2020, FUSE Autumn 2021 was a success. Shows sold out across the festival, audiences and artists were reunited, and the celebration was cathartic.

For Spring 2021, we’re continuing the party with an ecstatic program of music and dance, visual art, conversation, workshops and community collaboration.

That’s because it’s our privilege to do so.
