An Evening of Poetry and Music with Angela Costi and Irine Vela

Angela Costi brings the world of Cyprus to Australia in her poetry collection, An embroidery of old maps and new. Migration and the memories of women’s traditions are woven throughout these poems. Angela’s talk and poetry readings will be interwoven with performances of the bouzouki by the talented Irine Vela.

Angela Costi is known as Aggeliki Kosti among the Cypriot-Greek diaspora. She has worked as a community lawyer in the social justice sector and as a community artist with a focus on human rights issues.

Irine Vela is a director, producer, composer, musician, sound designer, librettist and teaching artist. Being a child of refugee and immigrant parents of mixed faiths – Muslim and Orthodox, informed an arts practice and a body of work that embodies the tensions and vitality that diverse and ghettoised voices and forms bring to the Australian arts.
