Artist Statement

Creature explores the metamorphosis of a Mary Quant fashionista into a full-length human accessory. This charming, whacky and funny work transforms thousands of recycled bags into a plush creature, the result of the fashionista’s extreme desire to accessorise, in ever more daring ways.

Artist Bio

Katrina graduated from the Australian Ballet School in 1984 and performed professionally in Australia and in the UK, with The Dancers Company, The Australian Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre (UK) and Victorian State Opera. She has danced for and with independent Australian contemporary dance artists on stage and in films. As a director and choreographer, she continues to make and perform dance work. Her most recent solo work, Bird, was streamed during HillScene Live Festival (2020); other recent solo works include: Birdwatching, BOLD Festival 2019 and My Body is an Etching, BOLD Festival (2017). Katrina has received numerous awards and opportunities including the Caroline Plummer Fellowship (Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand), and artist residencies. She received the 2018 Australian Dance Award for services to dance education. Her 2019 work The Right for Fine Lines Dance was awarded the 2020 Australian Dance Award for Most Outstanding Achievement in Community Dance. Katrina has lived for 20 years in Reservoir.

Robert Wagner is a professional freelance photographer based in Melbourne whose work spans a variety of genres including portraiture, movement, event, documentary, commercial, street and travel photography. Robert is a storyteller and delights in the different elements that his work affords, whether it's capturing life's significant events, the beauty in natural surroundings or the diversity and energy of the world, the streets, the businesses or the people around him. Robert has collaborated with Katrina since 2013.
